Why?

Why Is an Unlock Needed?

BMW has implemented an OBD write-protection on many engine ECUs via firmware update. Without an unlock, flash tools like MHD or Bootmod3 cannot write to the ECU.

Factory Write Protection

BMW introduced OBD write protection via firmware update starting around mid-2019. Affected ECUs cannot be flashed without an unlock.

Frequently Asked Questions About OBD Unlock

What exactly is an OBD unlock?
The unlock removes the factory write protection from the engine ECU. Only then can flash tools like MHD or Bootmod3 write to the DME.
Does the unlock include a performance upgrade?
No. The unlock itself does not change any maps or engine performance – it is the technical foundation for subsequent flashing.
Does the ECU need to be opened?
No. The unlock is performed in so-called bench mode via the regular ECU connectors – the housing remains fully sealed.
How do I know if my vehicle is compatible?
It's not just the model that matters – software version, production date, and ECU version are also relevant. Use our free compatibility check or send us your VIN.
Can I drive the vehicle while the ECU is being shipped?
No. Without the engine ECU, the vehicle is not drivable. Plan the shipping time accordingly – or choose the on-site appointment option.
Does the unlock affect warranty or guarantee?
Modifications to the ECU software can be detected by the manufacturer and may affect warranty, goodwill, or leasing conditions.
Does the unlock survive a BMW software update?
BMW typically only performs software updates during recalls or when replacing ECUs – in both cases, a re-unlock may be necessary.
What happens if something goes wrong during the unlock? Is my data safe?
Before every unlock, we create a complete backup of your ECU's original data. Should anything go wrong during the process, we can restore the original state.
